Speech and Debate Season Summary

The Dublin Jerome Speech and Debate Team had its most successful season this year, ending the post-season with some historical numbers. Shattering their previous record of 20 state qualifiers, 32 students qualified to the state competition, leading Jerome to become back-to-back Columbus District Champions!

At the state tournament, a total of eleven students made it to elimination rounds, including

  • Dhruti Shah and Vania Gandhi (Public Forum Debate),
  • Arwen Zhang (Congressional Debate),
  • Prisha Patel (Congressional Debate),
  • Dhruv Lingala (Congressional Debate),
  • Olivia Wang (Original Oratory),
  • Annika Sunkara (Informative Speaking),
  • Nitya Nekkanti (United States Extemporaneous Speaking), and
  • Lahari Donepudi (United States Extemporaneous Speaking).

Jerome also gained its first two state finalists, Sachi Chhibber (4th in Declamation) and Davyn Jones (4th in Informative Speaking)! Receiving excellence awards in both debate and rhetoric, Jerome improved 12 places from the previous year, placing 7th overall out of 79 teams.

However, the season isn’t over. Coming up in April, Dhruv Lingala (Congressional Debate) will be competing in the Tournament of Champions. In May, Davyn Jones (Informative Speaking), Anya Zhang (Original Oratory), Nitya Nekkanti (United States Extemporaneous Speaking), and Lahari Donepudi (United States Extemporaneous Speaking) will compete in the National Individual Events Tournament of Champions. And finally, Lynn Zheng and Dinesh Bojja (Public Forum Debate), and Lahari Donepudi (United States Extemporaneous Speaking) will travel to the NSDA Nationals Tournament in June. Senior Annika Sunkara will be making an appearance at all three national tournaments in Informative Speaking. Good luck to these Celts!
