On September 14, the Ohio Department of Education released the 2023 Ohio School Report Cards. New this year, schools and districts received overall ratings of 1-5 stars in half-star increments. The report cards also include five rated components and various report-only data. The five components, Achievement, Progress, Gap Closing, Early Literacy and Graduation, received ratings from one to five stars. A sixth component, College, Career, Workforce and Military Readiness, is included in report-only data, but will not receive a rating until 2025.

It’s important to understand the overall rating scale and what the stars represent. A 5 star rating means the district significantly exceeds state standards, while 4 stars and above means the district exceeds state standards. A 3 star rating represents that the district meets state standards.

Overall, Dublin City Schools exceeded state standards, receiving a rating of 4.5 stars. For components, the district significantly exceeded or exceeded state standards in four of five areas. Dublin received 5 stars for Gap Closing and Graduation and 4 stars for Achievement and Progress. For the fifth component, Early Literacy, the district was rated 3 stars, which shows Dublin is meeting state standards for reading improvement and proficiency.

As part of the district’s strategic plan, Journey 2030, which was adopted in March 2023, Dublin has a renewed focus on early literacy. The district adopted an early literacy philosophy and implemented the 95 Phonics Core Program in 2022-2023. A new literacy screening assessment was also added this fall, and K-3 teachers have ongoing professional development in phonological awareness, dyslexia, and the science of reading.

“We are proud of our students and staff in the Dublin City School District. We will continue to look at ways to live our ‘always growing’ value through the work that we do and learn from both the achievements and the challenges we experience," said Dr. John Marschhausen, Superintendent. 

Although the College, Career, Workforce and Military Readiness component was not rated this year, Dublin City Schools is proud of the variety of post-high school options our students pursue. Of the 1,218 graduates of the Class of 2023, 708 students achieved remediation-free scores on their College and Career Readiness Test (ACT and/or SAT); 11 students committed to the military; and more than 700 students completed an Emerald Campus Career Academy or Tolles Career Technical Center program.

Ohio School Report Cards are one part of the story when it comes to detailing efforts and measuring success in the Dublin City Schools learning community. In addition to the state report card, Dublin monitors individual student growth through the Measurement of Academic Progress (MAP) assessment in reading and mathematics. Last year, 71% of our students were at or above the national average for mathematics and 70% of students were at or above the national average for reading on the spring MAP assessment. 

“The State Report Card is one of the many ways we hold ourselves accountable and measure progress. Our mission statement is to prepare every student for success. We know preparedness comes with a well-rounded education and a high-quality school experience. Performance on a one-day assessment is just a slice of the work being done throughout an entire school year,” said Dr. Marschhausen.

Dublin City Schools encourages parents, caregivers, business leaders, and community members to learn what’s happening in their local schools.
