GMS NEWS - August 18, 17

Welcome back!  It has been wonderful greeting all of the students as they returned to school.  They seem happy and enthusiastic to be back!  That fact is a tribute to the attitudes of you and our AWESOME teaching staff.  It’s great to be a GMS Celt!

During the afternoon of Aug. 21, a solar eclipse will be viewable in Central Ohio weather permitting. A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the earth and the sun, casting its shadow on the earth. We want our students to experience this rare and important scientific educational opportunity.

There are a variety of ways to view the eclipse. Our expert teaching staff has plans in place to provide this learning experience for our students. 6th and 7th grade students will watch the eclipse via live stream at .  Eighth grade students are building pinhole viewers in science class.  If your 8th grade child returns the signed permission form he/she received in 7th period today, your child may go outside and view the eclipse with the pinhole viewer.  All other 8th grade students will view the eclipse indoors via live stream at the address above.   If you would like to check out your child from school to view at home under your supervision, this absence will be excused.

Students should be reminded that while they board the buses, ride home and while they are walking home, they should not look directly at the eclipse. Athletic teams will be warming up inside and will go outside for practice at the conclusion of the eclipse.  As always, student safety is our number one priority and all safety precautions will be taken during school hours when the eclipse is expected to be visible weather permitting.  As with taking part in any natural event, there are always risks associated with it. In this case, even a few seconds of viewing the eclipse without proper viewing glasses/pinhole equipment can result in permanent damage to eyes.

If you would like additional information on the eclipse, visit for links to information about the mathematical and scientific aspects of the event, as well as tips for safely viewing the event outside of the school day.

Have a wonderful weekend!

We try very hard to provide families with multiple sources from which they can gather information about what is happening at Grizzell on a daily basis. Our website is the most comprehensive resource available to you.  From the main page of the GMS website you can:

  • Report your child’s absence (phone number and email link for attendance are on the right hand side)

  • Read each week’s newsletter

  • See our twitter feed

  • See the calendar of events

  • See the athletic schedules

You can read the daily announcements, add money to your child’s lunch account, get information about 6th Grade Camp and the 8th Grade Washington DC trip, read about the many clubs your child can join a part of their middle school experience and peruse frequently asked questions regarding attendance.  We invite you to explore our website at

Additionally, we use twitter and email as mediums to deliver information to you. Our newsletter will typically arrive in your inbox each Thursday afternoon. Twitter is utilized for reminders about events, last minute information and as an opportunity to share the fun and extraordinary things our students encounter in their learning and social experiences at GMS.  Please follow us at @gmsDSCD and our athletic department at @GMSCeltics.

There is always so much to do to prepare for the beginning of the school year and once again our PTO was there to support the students, families and teachers.  From our new family picnic, to the school supply sale, to providing our teachers with a delicious lunch on Tuesday from Moretti’s, our PTO is thoughtful and generous.  If you have not had the opportunity to become involved with the PTO, please take a look at the many opportunities to do so and join us at the first meeting of the year, Wednesday, August 30 at Napa at 12:00 p.m. The PTO page on our website is where you can check out upcoming meetings, make a donation and learn all about our PTO.
