BACK TO SCHOOL NEWS

Welcome to Grizzell Middle School! We hope you have had a fun summer making memories and taking the time to relax and visit with those important to you.  As you know, the start of school is just around the corner.  We have planned several events and worked very hard in preparation for the new school year. I’d like to call your attention to the checklist at the bottom of this message. Completion of the items on this checklist is paramount in making the transition back to school as smooth as possible. For your convenience, we have provided links to the action items that are required at the beginning of each school year.

For families who are new to Dublin, we have a New Student Breakfast on August 8th at 9 a.m. which features activities that will help those new students become familiar with other new students, as well as Grizzell Middle School. Please contact Katie Pack, guidance secretary at 614-718-8613 to add your child’s name to the list of attendees.

Our “Back to School” day is August 8th.  Sixth Grade Only Orientation will take place from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. Both students and parents are asked to attend. Upon arrival, parents should go to the gym, where they will participate in a presentation “My Child Is In Middle School. Now What?” which is designed to introduce parents to office staff, Schoology, and use of technology devices as learning tools. Simultaneously, students will go to the commons to meet their homeroom student ambassador for building exploration, meeting their teachers, walking their schedules, picking up pre-ordered school supplies, getting their school pictures taken (no need to stand in line), and practicing opening their lockers.

Our 7th and 8th grade students are invited to attend “Back to School Day” on the afternoon of August 8th from 1-5 p.m.  As in years past, students can decorate their lockers, pick up pre-ordered school supplies, have their pictures taken, and walk their schedules.

Please take the time to look over the GMS website.  It is full of important information and should be your primary resource for event dates (academic, music, and athletic), weekly newsletters and school information.  Additionally, please follow us on twitter @gmsDCSD and @GMSCeltics for reminders throughout the school year.

Enjoy the last few days of summer! We can’t wait to reconnect with you and your family, and we know that the 2018-19 school year is sure to be a great one!

Sincerely,

Corinne

GMS NEWS - May 17, 2018

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

It has been a true pleasure serving as your Principal this school year.  Although we are ready for the relaxation summer holiday will provide, the end of a school year always makes me nostalgic. I enjoy building relationships with students and families during their time at GMS and I recognize that when June arrives, my opportunity to interact with one-third of our community has come to an end. Please know that if you are moving on to Jerome  OR outside of the Dublin City Schools, you will always be welcome here. And, if you’re returning to GMS in August, I will be super excited to get our 2018-19 school year started.

As we look ahead to the 2018-19 school year, I want to alert you to change in our summer mailer. Alongside Jerome High School, we have decided to make our summer mailer 100% digital. Please look for an email from me in mid to late July that directs you to several web based forms, athletic information, picture forms, etc.  If you need paper copies of any of the forms, please contact me at 614-718-8618. We will have a limited number of forms available in the main office throughout the summer. I also want to encourage you to take advantage of the PTO supply sale. It is the only fund raiser and the primary funding source for being able to provide activities, food, and fun to our students throughout the school year. Details on ordering are listed below.

Have a wonderful weekend!

GMS NEWS - May 10, 2018

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

It’s an exciting day at GMS!  The 8th grade students are competing in their May Madness preliminary competitions this morning and at lunch time; our incoming 6th grade students and their families will be touring the building starting at 5:30pm; the art show begins at 6pm; and, we culminate our day with a band concert which begins at 7:30pm.

The fun doesn’t end today! Tomorrow from 3:15-5:30 p.m., May Madness Finals take place in the gym. The competition is closer this year than I recall in my tenure so tomorrow’s finals will determine the 2018 GMS May Madness winner. PTO is providing FREE pizza and water to all students in attendance and please know that you and future GMS students are invited to enjoy the fun. One final note about May Madness...students who stay after school to participate or spectate will be asked to stay in the building until the conclusion of the event, unless a  parent is picking up in the front parking lots. Students who plan on walking home may leave at 5 p.m. Thank you in advance for your support with this safety measure.

Have a wonderful weekend!

I’m looking forward to seeing many of you over the next week at May Madness events (May 4-May 11) and at our Art Show on May 10th, 6-7:30pm.  The art show will feature creations from ALL students who were enrolled in art this school year. Our students have amazing talent and if you haven’t attended in years past, I highly encourage you to stop by and browse the displays.   You will not believe the pieces were created by 11, 12, and 13 year olds!

In addition to having an opportunity to view the beautiful student work,  families can also grab a snack or dinner from food trucks located in the parking lot during the event. Sounds like a great night to me!  See you there.

GMS NEWS - April 26, 2018

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

If you have never had the privilege of volunteering for or watching a May Madness event, I’d like to take a moment to describe it.  Students from all 3 grade levels sign up to participate in a variety of events- everything from cupcake decorating, chess, poetry writing, RubiK’s cube, and dodgeball. There is literally an event for every child at Grizzell!

The celebration begins after school on May 4th and continues throughout the following week, culminating with the finals on Friday, May 11th.  All students are given a team t-shirt at the beginning of the competition and asked to wear it on the days that their grade level is competing. T shirts are a specific color for each team and wearing the shirt promotes team spirit and camaraderie.  This is one of the ways we make our BIG school feel smaller.

During the week of May 7th, There are competitions at lunch daily and each grade level is designated a day to contest the athletic events. (See sign up genius below to determine which day your child’s grade level is competing.)  Students are out of class in the morning of their grade level competition day to either participate or spectate. It’s great fun!

The week is concluded with a huge celebration after school on May 11th during which the finals of many events are contested and a school champion is crowned. Take a look at the photo below.  You can see the excitement on the students’ faces.

Thank you to parents who signed up to help with May Madness.  We’re getting closer to filling all of the volunteer spots necessary to host the event, but we STILL NEED YOU!  Please consider checking out the sign up genius site below for times and dates that fit into your calendar.

See you on the 4th!

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Brrr!  Will our spring sports teams ever get to compete?!  I know there have been a few games and it looks like things are warming up next week.  Thanks to everyone for your flexibility with cancellations and postponements. I know that Mr. Hounshell is working doubly hard to communicate early and effectively.

Testing is going very smoothly. Thank you for having your child to school on time and with the proper materials.  The last test, excluding make-ups, is scheduled for April 23rd. We’re almost there!

I’m looking forward to seeing you at upcoming concerts, athletic events, and at May Madness during the week of May 4- May 11.  Please see the sign up genius below. There are many time slots and a variety of events still needing parent volunteers. I am confident we can fill the needs! Thanks for considering giving your time.

GMS NEWS - April 12, 2018

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

May Madness is coming! At its conclusion each year I never think it’s possible for our students to have more fun.  Yet, the following year, they do! Our wonderful PTO and parent community continue to add events that widen the interest range and provide opportunities for more students to participate. As you can see below, the event has something for every child, and that is so awesome. We are a big school but we feel smaller when everyone has a place and contributes to the positive climate.

In order to make May Madness happen, we need you!! Most volunteer opportunities simply require your presence.  The event organizers do the majority of the heavy lifting. It’s simply a matter of being present to facilitate the competition.  And of course, I’ll be there right alongside you to enjoy the fun and encourage the students.

Thank you in advance for considering getting involved in May Madness.  Invite a friend to join you. I know you’ll be pleasantly surprised by how much joy you feel!

Have a wonderful weekend!
