Measures of Academic Progress Assessments

Dear Parent or Guardian,

Having the right data is a key component of individualizing instruction for each child in the Dublin City School District.  The Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessments give us the ability to measure student achievement and academic growth, independent of grade, across time. The MAP assessment allows us to compare student, class and grade level performance with other students’ performance from around the country.  

To help families understand the MAP assessment and how we will use the results to impact instruction, we are providing the following information.

Structure of the MAP Assessment

=      Reading assessment given to students in Grades 2 – 8 and students who receive ELL, reading support or special education services in Grades 9-12

=      Mathematics assessment given to students in Grades 1 – 8 and students who receive ELL or special education services in Grades 9-12

=      3 assessment windows per academic year

o   Fall Window:  August – September

o   Winter Window:  December – February

o   Spring Window:  May

=      Web based, multiple choice assessment.

=      Approximately 50 multiple-choice questions are administered to each student, although the questions cover a sampling of standards; they are not a comprehensive indicator of grade level mastery.

=      Assessment has no time limit – majority of students finish each assessment in 45-60 minutes.

=      Assessment adjusts to the instructional level of each student - every student gets a unique set of test questions based on responses to previous questions.

Structure of MAP Results

=      Teachers receive a RIT Score for each student indicating their overall academic ability in Reading and Mathematics

=      Teachers also receive a Content Strand RIT Score for each student within Reading and Mathematics

=      Each score can be compared to the following National Normative Data:

Use of MAP Results to Impact Instruction

=      Teachers will compare their students’ results to the National Normative Data.

=      In the Spring, teachers will compare the Fall RIT score to the Winter and Spring RIT score to determine student growth.

=      Teachers will access the detailed content strand reports to identify the strengths and challenges in Reading and Mathematics for each individual student.

=      MAP RIT Scores in the 95th-99th percentile fall within the gifted identification range based upon the Ohio Department of Education Gifted Operating Standards. Reminder that gifted services for cognitively gifted students is not determined by this assessment. A gifted identification on the MAP assessment does not place a student into gifted service or indicate a change of class placement. Your child’s teacher is aware of these assessment results and will continue to support your child in the regular classroom setting using additional data to determine next instructional steps.
