A restructured summer school program will provide students with access to online courses throughout the summer, changing the traditional model of summer school at all three levels. These changes will greatly reduce the district’s personnel costs while providing a new blended learning model and online learning opportunities for students. Credit recovery opportunities will continue to be offered at the West Bridge Academy facility for students in need of those classes.
Transportation will not be provided to any summer school program.
High School
Two classes, Physical Education and Ohio Graduation Test preparation, will meet in a traditional format at Coffman High School. Eight other advanced credit courses will be offered in a blended learning model. This means students will have some initial face-to-face time with an instructor but will spend the majority of their time completing the course in an electronic format. These new courses were developed, and will be taught, by Dublin City Schools teachers. These course offerings will be: English IV, Chinese I, Physical Science, Health, Economics, Government, Algebra 1 and Environmental Science.
Middle School
The district will be transitioning from a limited number of traditional course offerings to a group of online resources available over the summer. Multiple electronic resources will be provided in core areas. A number of web sites will be hand selected by middle school educators to help parents address the specific needs of their student in the areas of math and language arts.
Elementary School
The elementary school summer school experience will similarly be transformed to an online resource center. High quality web sites in the areas of math and literacy, designed to help students keep their skills sharp over the summer break, will be selected by a team of elementary educators.
English Language Leaners (ELL)
Two options will be available to ELL (English Language Learners) students over the summer. Select students in grades 3-12 will have the opportunity to use Rosetta Stone (language learning software) licenses owned by the district.
A second option, the ELL Media Club, will occur on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Chapman and Scottish Corners in June. It is open to ELL students enrolled in grades K-5. A total of eight, two-hour sessions will take place.
