David Wu of Dublin Jerome, Yana Dubrovsky of Dublin Scioto, and Kasun Waidyaraine of Dublin Coffman are candidates to become Presidential Scholars when the list is made public in early May.
Scholars are chosen on the basis of their accomplishments in many areas, including academic and artistic success, leadership and involvement in the school and community.
The Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964 by Executive Order of the President, to recognize and honor some of our nation’s most distinguished graduating seniors. In 1979, the program was expanded to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional scholarship and talent in the visual, creative and performing arts.
Each year, up to 141 students are chosen to become Presidential Scholars. Each year, 3,000 candidates are identified based on having scored exceptionally well on the College Board SAT or the ACT assessment. In April, 500 semifinalists will be selected with Scholars listed in early May.
Those chosen to be Scholars will be invited to National Recognition Week in Washington DC which will culminate with the presentation of the Presidential Scholars medallion during a ceremony sponsored by the White House.
