After careful consideration, the most prudent course of action at this time is to revise the district’s capital improvements schedule to maximize efficiency and cost savings.
Some projects have been moved up in order to more quickly realize their benefits. The district’s energy conservation initiative associated with House Bill 264 has been moved up to the summer of 2010 to realize energy cost savings more quickly.
The district’s new elementary school will open in August 2013, rather than in August 2012. The new opening date will save the district dollars in staffing costs and the expense to have the building designed and planned.
“The Jerome Village development is approximately a year behind schedule,” said Superintendent Dr. David Axner. “The prudent and efficient thing to do is to push back the opening of the new elementary to the fall of 2013.”
Jerome Village is expected to bring 1,440 new homes to the district when it is completely built out. The new elementary school will be located near this development.
The portion of the bond issue and operating levy passed in 2008 that is earmarked for a new elementary school will be used for that purpose and that purpose only. All of the “yellow board” projects outlined in Issue 76 will be completed.
The revised capital improvement schedule will also allow the district the opportunity to evaluate the capital needs for all-day kindergarten. About 22 additional classrooms are expected to be needed to accommodate all-day kindergarten.
Classroom additions at Karrer and Davis Middle Schools are expected to be completed in the summer of 2010. These additional classrooms will allow the district to indefinitely delay the construction of a fifth middle school.
Other projects within the current capital improvement schedule, which runs through 2012, will be evaluated yearly based on need and work flow.
