GMS NEWS - January 12, 2017

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
We are having an exciting, event-filled week here at GMS! Both the girls and boys basketball teams are in action this evening. The girls are away at Olentangy Liberty and the boys are at home vs. Liberty. To show our support to JJ Thomas, students are having an “Orange Out” today at school and at the home basketball game. We’d love to pack the gym with orange so please consider joining us! #JJStrong

The wrestling team defeated Hilliard Memorial last evening for the first time in 7 years. I was thoroughly impressed with how hard each athlete worked during his match and how much support each athlete provided for his teammates. One of my favorite moments of the evening came when an experienced 8th grade wrestler mentored a 7th grader after his match. They talked and then the older boy demonstrated how the younger could use a move for more success in his next match. This kind of camaraderie is what makes being involved in a school activity so important!

Drama club continues its diligent preparation for their presentation of “Beauty and the Beast.” Dates for the performances are posted on our school calendar, and I encourage you to attend. It is going to be fantastic!!

The week’s activities are rounded out with the Spelling Bee. Preliminary grade rounds are being held today at lunch with the final round taking place at the end of the school day tomorrow. The school wide winner will represent GMS at Ohio University in the State Spelling Bee in March. Additionally, March Madness points are up for grabs! Please check out twitter and our school website for an announcement tomorrow regarding the winners.

Have a wonderful weekend!

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Welcome back! I hope the winter holiday gave you time to rest, relax, and re-energize! The students did a great job transitioning back into “school” mode this morning, and our winter clubs/athletics are in full force. Please check the school website for upcoming events, competitions, and practices.

On Monday, January 9th our 7th grade students will be visiting Tolles Career and Technical Center. I am really excited for the students to see this 21st Century teaching and learning facility. In preparation for the visit, students will be watching 1 minute video clips about each of the 22 Tolles programs. Subsequently, students will choose which program they prefer to tour while on the field trip. Unlike in past years, students will get a more in depth and more accurate view of the entrance requirements, the day-to-day learning, and the certificate options for a program in which they have interest.

This is just one of the many differences about the opportunity Tolles Career and Technical Center offers our students. I imagine your perception may be like mine, based on the vocational/career center model of the 80’s and 90’s. The technical and career center model of 2017 includes many programs that require a high grade point average to be considered for entrance and also give students an opportunity to become certified upon graduation. Not only do these qualities change the expectation level of Tolles students, but they may also facilitate a fast track to college graduation and a means to finance what college level courses students are required to take.

Although the upcoming trip is only for 7th grade students, we have plans to schedule a voluntary trip (prior to high school scheduling) for interested Grade 8 students. Tolles has also shared that they are happy to schedule personal tours for families, should you or your child be interested in more details about a particular program or two. I encourage you to talk with your child about this challenging, engaging, and potentially money saving opportunity. If you would like more information about Tolles, I have included a short video link here: Tolles program video

Have a wonderful weekend!

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Season’s Greetings! It is crazy that we are three school days away from the halfway point of the 16-17 school year. I hope the words of my weekly newsletters have demonstrated how fortunate I feel to be leading Grizzell Middle School. Every day there is something impressive about what our students and teachers accomplish. Rich learning. Significant service. Exceptional performances. Thank you for all you do to prepare your children as learners, for all you teach them about being good people, and for all of the support you provide to the GMS community.

Have a wonderful, safe, relaxing winter holiday!

GMS NEWS - December 7, 2016

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Greetings! It finally feels like December and I heard this morning that there may be snow on the way! I am a fan of winter but I know not everyone feels cheery when they are anticipating cold and blustery weather. I hope you can find time this weekend to stay cozy and warm!

Perhaps, you’ll also find time to do some reading. If you’re looking for a good book or a holiday gift, our book fair is available through the end of the day Monday, December 12th. In fact, Mrs. Moshiri will be here at school on Monday evening from 6:30-7:30pm so that families can browse and shop. If you’d like to support the book fair and another student driven initiative, please consider the Jr. Teen Institute club’s book drive taking place now through December 16th. New or gently used books may be donated in your child’s homeroom class. This event is also one of the first March Madness events. Contributions will be recorded and the team with the most donations will receive March Madness points.

Perhaps, you’ll find time to enjoy surfing the internet. If this is the case, please consider visiting the two links listed below. I was recently contacted by a local businessman about publicizing and supporting fund raising for JJ Thomas and his family. The links below will take you to a “Go Fund Me” page hosted by the businessman and a Facebook page (Fight to Win #JJStrong) that shares information about a special showing of the movie “Sing.” If you’re interested in participating in either opportunity, please check out the links below.

Regardless of how you spend your weekend time, I hope you are warm, safe and happy. Have a great weekend!

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

I hope our recent break was relaxing and filled with fun. If you were able to enjoy family and friends in addition to finding time to rest, that is a bonus! In the spirit of giving that often comes with the upcoming winter holiday, I want to fill you in on several service opportunities our students have recently initiated.

  • Team 7-2 has spearheaded “Helping at the Holiday.” Student are working to raise $500 by selling coupons for around the house sorts of jobs- raking leaves, shoveling snow, hanging holiday lights, etc. The money they collect will be used to provide gifts to a needy family in the Central Ohio area.

  • #JJStrong, initiated by JJ Thomas’ classmates and friends, has raised over $1000 through the sale of orange wristbands. A few wristbands are still available and can be purchased for a minimum donation of $1.

  • 8th grade students will be working together on the afternoon of December 16th to make items such as fleece blankets and meals for the homeless of Central Ohio. Please look for emails from team leaders or teachers about his initiative if your child is in 8th grade.

  • FCA students have organized a toy drive through the end of the day on December 2nd. Toys can be dropped off in Mr. Wadenstierna’s room or in Mrs. Yuen’s room.  All donations will benefit NC4K (Nellie's Champions for Kids). NC4K is a local organization that supports pediatric cancer families.  Throughout the year they offer financial aid, hospital support and host events that inspire their families to make life a little easier for kids and teens with cancer.  All toys and gift cards donated will be given to local families affected by pediatric cancer at NC4K's annual Christmas celebration.  Often these are the only gifts the children receive due to financial hardships caused by their cancer diagnosis.

  • Jr. Teen Institute has organized a book drive during the week of December 12. Please have your son or daughter listen for announcements regarding when to turn in books.

Finally, I want to remind you that our Library Book Fair begins tomorrow and concludes on December 12th. Students will have an opportunity to purchase books before school, during study center, and after school. Families can also make purchase on the evening of December 12th from 6:30-7:30pm. See the student book fair schedule below as well as a link to purchase books online.

Have a great weekend!

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE - The Power of One

One of the things for which I am most grateful is the kindness, compassion and generosity I see on a daily basis here at Grizzell. Our students consistently demonstrate how much they care for one another. An example of this became very evident within the last week. One of our students was recently diagnosed with a serious illness. Last week, without any prompting, students approached me with ideas on how they could support this student and his family during this difficult time. They decided they’d like to order wristbands and carefully thought about the message and the color they thought would be appropriate. In just one day, we distributed more than 450 orange wristbands to students and staff with the message #JJStrong. Students were asked to make a donation of one dollar or more and we collected more than $850 in just one day. This money will go toward assisting the family. We have a limited number of wristbands that remain and I told the students we will order more if needed. This came from one small group of students, with one great idea, followed by one email, one afternoon announcement and one tweet. Thank you for raising wonderful children who consistently model generosity and kindness.

This Thanksgiving, I don’t need to look very hard to find life’s blessings...there are 840 of them in this building every day! Enjoy the holiday!

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

I have good news to report on Assistant Principal, Shana Murray’s back surgery: the procedure went exactly as the surgeon expected and Ms. Murray should be out of the hospital and recovering at home by the weekend. We were very relieved to hear this news and join you in wishing Ms. Murray a speedy recovery.

In Ms. Murray’s absence, Mrs. Holly Coombs will be serving at Interim Assistant Principal. Mrs. Coombs is a seasoned administrative veteran, leading both an elementary and middle school over her career. Most recently, Holly served as the Interim Principal at Wyandot Elementary from January, 2016 to the end of the 2015-16 school year. In just her first week, she has gone out of her way to get to know students and teaching staff. Today, she introduced herself to all of the students during their lunch period and communicated how genuinely excited she is to be their interim assistant principal. I have found Holly to be enthusiastic, student-centered, and a very effective communicator. I am excited to be working alongside Holly and know that you will give her a hearty Celtic welcome when you see her at Grizzell!

Have a wonderful weekend!
