During the week of May 9th, the students at Eli Pinney will be participating in the 1st annual “Penny Wars”. Every classroom (Preschool through 5th grade) will have a gallon milk jug and students are encouraged to bring in pennies to fill their classroom jug. Each penny in the jug represents one point. If a silver coin (nickel, dime, quarter, or half dollar) is added, then that coin value is deducted from the class points. For example, if Mrs. LeGros’ students bring in 200 pennies and 4 dimes on Monday, then they will have a total of 160 points. The classroom with the most points at the end of the week wins a pizza party with the teacher and Mr. Ehrsam.
All of the money raised will go to various charities selected by our students. The money collected for preschool, kindergarten, and 1st grade will go to the American Heart Association. 2nd and 3rd grade proceeds will go to the Muscular Dystrophy Association and 4th and 5th grade earnings will go to the 'Brighton Their World' foundation.
Brighton Their World is opening a primary school in the Shiro Meda area of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This primary school will serve 300 students, provide much needed education, and include a feeding program. Money raised by Eli Pinney students will be used towards a playground for the school. In third world countries children often lack the simple pleasures of a safe place to play to keep them strong and healthy.
On Friday, May 13th, the students will celebrate the culmination of the “Penny Wars” by participating in the “Walk for a Cause” on the playground during lunch recess.
