Why do Glacier Ridge Students need public library cards?
During the 2013-2014 school year, it is my hope that all students will obtain a public library card from the Columbus Metropolitan Library. Children and young adults under the age of 18 can be issued library cards with a parent/guardian's signature. The CML has many wonderful opportunities for learning that require a library card to access these resources from home and school. For example, if a student is looking for a good book to read use NoveList Plus, need to research for a school project use EBSCOHost, or have to choose a new cell phone use Consumer Reports for FREE. Students may log onto columbuslibrary.org and click on Research. A comprehensive list of databases is available for use by children and adults. Once the student has selected a database, he/she will be required to type in the library card number and a four-digit pin number (usually the last four digits of your home phone number). These premium databases keep our outstanding public library available to us 24/7.
Other reasons for getting a library card include:
Establish a relationship between the library and the student.
So kids can make their parents take them to the library ;-)
Kids feel special and important with a library card.
Instilling a love of reading is a lifelong gift.
